ABOUT PÉDALER

"Pédaler dans la choucroute" is a French idiom literally translated as "pedaling in sauerkraut". It's an expressions which describes someone caught up in a situation where, as hard as they try to get out of it, things just become worse. They become confused, overwhelmed, and end up spinning their wheels, not actually going anywhere.

Living in the Moselle region of France, each day can feel as if I'm pedaling through sauerkraut. Life in the Lorraine is very different than life in my native Los Angeles, California. In fact, it's safe to say life in the Moselle is very different than any other part of France.

There's lots of sauerkraut here.

My work is based in Los Angeles. My artwork is done currently in France 57. Traveling back and forth such as I do may seem so, ooh-la-la, but it can get to be much like slogging through sauerkraut.

And yet, this wacky migration pattern can be curiously fun. I'm allowed to experience foods, art, music, politics (and paying my utilities) on both sides of our lovely planet. Moselle is close to three borders which means doing dinner in Germany not too far off track.

Pedaling through sauerkraut is stupid. It's annoying, and slow. Sometimes I wonder if it is better to try and pedal through the stupid mess or just get off the bike and walk through the fermented slush. Depends the day which way I choose.
